Dear Friends,
We are very grateful for you and your faithful prayers and financial support for this ministry. God is faithful and is providing what is needed through each of you. I am in close communication with our Haitian Director, Daniel, often daily and always at least weekly. Despite all the hardships Daniel deals with, he remains positive. I enjoy my interactions with him and find it very helpful when writing the newsletters. A few days ago, I received this email from Daniel:
We can say that things are very uncertain for the Haitian people. Many gang members have been killed in recent months, but they are still in great numbers and continue to terrorize the population. In such conditions it’s tempting to ask: where is God in all of this? Since childhood we have been singing: “My God is so big, so strong and so mighty. There’s nothing my God cannot do.” Now, when our children ask why God has not delivered us from those bandits, the answer does not come easily even for us as adults.
We come to the same spot as the Apostle Paul where we would like God to just take away that thorn (the insecurity characterized by gun violence and kidnapping (2 Cor. 12:9-11)). Yet, we have been living through it for almost eight years. We can’t complain, for God’s grace has sustained us. They say, “trials can either break you or make you”. We must seek to work out our faith even in the midst of those trials knowing that the end goal of “the testing of faith and perseverance in Christ is maturity and completeness (James 1:2-4). We will continue to serve in a world of chaos and madness.
With mature, wise, faithful and trustworthy leadership in Daniel, we press on to carry on the work that God has called us to. Our elderly and handicapped ministry has now grown to 110 people being served. These are all people who have no other support. They have been neglected and forgotten. Most of them are believers but some have not yet responded to the gospel. Our Elderly Ministry Haitian leaders use this support to boldly share the gospel. The people are in need of physical food, but their greatest need is spiritual, and Daniel and his pastoral leadership model and train our workers to prioritize the gospel, while sharing the physical food in Jesus’ name.
Every Sunday morning our church members come to the gathering and enjoy a small snack. Usually coffee, juice, cookies, sometimes sandwiches and even spaghetti at times. Some of them arrive tired after walking a great distance and are always ready to receive some refreshments.
Recently three couples who lived together and had children were saved. As a result of Biblical teaching, they decided to get married. In December those three ceremonies took place. How great it is to see God’s Word become alive in His children!
The assembly in Morne-Chaise were in need of worship leaders and instrumentalists, so they started a music school. 13 students are being instructed in use of instruments and voice. 10 more are planning to join the school in March. The church members put their limited resources together so they could pay a trained music teacher. Daniel recently listened to and watched a video of the results and he was pleased!
It is encouraging to see people step up and move forward on their own. When many of the leadership of the villages have left due to threats, others fill the roles. The mother of the assistant pastor in Morne-Chaise was robbed and beaten, but she and the other villagers refuse to give up. They are a testimony of resilience!
Thank you for your prayers and support! We are blessed to have you as partners in serving some of the most needy in the world. Your prayers and financial support are truly making a difference in many lives!
Serving the Lord together,
Bernie, Sheryl & Philip Bovenkamp
