We received a message from Art Berry this morning (Art and his wife Cyndy have a ministry in Haiti and partner with us on various projects). Art, who is in Bellingham right now, recently spoke with Sam, who ministers at an Orphanage/Guest House near the airport in Port-au-Prince. Art says that Sam “made it very clear that my going down there right now will serve no real benefit.” So Art has postponed his trip.
This is very consistent with what Pastor Diogene and others are telling us. There will come a time (and it may be soon) when we the rebuilding will begin. That is when we can play a more active role. For now, the best we can do is:
- Pray! If you want to effect change in Haiti right now, pray for the people there: for their safety, for their provision, and that the gospel of Jesus Christ will continue to win souls.
- Provide Pastor Diogene with the resources necessary to sustain our orphans, others associated with Starfish in Port-au-Prince, and the body of believers Pastor Diogene shepherds in Port-au-Prince. If you want to contribute, you can do so here.
- Be ready to act when the time is right. When the dust settles, when the Red Cross and other emergency responders are beginning to leave, then it will be time for us to begin rebuilding the lives on our Haitian brothers and sisters.
We don’t know yet what that rebuilding is going to look like — what we may bring in for teams and when that would be. But we will keep you updated as that becomes more clear in the coming days and weeks.
Thank you again for your partnership in this ministry,
Bernie, Sheryl & Philip Bovenkamp
“I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.” -Philippians 1:3-5
